Faerie Lore

Bogie: The boogeyman under the bed or in the closet. Bogies thrive on fear, and can take many forms, usually what their victim fears the most.

Brownie: Benevolent house faeries; brownies take care of "their" houses by helping with the chores, usually to the complete ignorance of the people who live there. Insult a brownie by giving it clothes or treating it poorly, however, and it will leave or worse, pull vicious pranks until it is appeased.

Changeling: When the fey steal a human child, the doppelganger left in its place is called a changeling, which can be a faery infant, or an inanimate object glamoured to look like the real child.

Goblin: Short, nasty faeries, not very bright, typically seen in packs.

Grimalkin: The name of the witches’ cat in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. A grimalkin can also be a term for an old gray cat, but if they are one and the same, Grimalkin isn’t saying.

Kelpie: Fey creature that usually takes the shape of a horse; lurks near water where it lures people onto its back, then takes them underwater to drown. Carnivorous, likes the taste of human flesh.

Mab: Queen of the Unseelie, or Winter, court

Nixie: Water faeries who possess a beautiful, seductive voice. They are fond of luring humans underwater with their singing.

Oberon: King of the Seelie, or Summer, court.

Phouka: Shapeshifters who are fond of pranks and trouble; their most common forms are that of a goat, a bird, or a horse or pony.

Puck/Robin Goodfellow: Oberon’s jester, but no one really knows what Puck really is. Some say he is a Phouka or Hob, others think he is something completely unique. Whatever he is, Puck is a trickster and an incorrigible prankster who can take many forms.

Redcap: Evil faeries with sharp teeth who are vicious and bloodthirsty; redcaps dip their caps in the blood of their victims; usually travel in gangs.

Sidhe: The faery nobility. Sidhe are tall, slender, and possess an otherworldly beauty.

Titania: Queen of the Seelie, or Summer, court; wife of Oberon

Will-O-the-Wisp: Creatures that appear as either luminous balls of light, or as a familiar person holding a candle. They love to lead travelers astray into dangerous situations.
